Last night we had the pleasure of playing “The Pulse Keeps Beating”, a special event put on following the cancellation of this year’s Pulse Festival. The night was originally planned as a promotional event for the festival but instead became much more. All proceeds from the event went to the Oceanward charity and we had an amazing time playing it. It was such an intimate night and the first time we have played “unplugged”. It was a bit weird for us but we were happy to give it a go for such a good cause! So I wrote this bassline a couple of years ago and I’d been saving it for a special day. So a year later I’m in this band called Stone Them Crows and I’ve played it to the guys and they went for it straight away – Robin responded with one of the smartest and cheekiest chorus lines, Dan got deep and started penning some words and Kooksy drove the train on this one. So we’d just come together and made this song which really felt like the next step in our evolution so we did not hesitate in recording it.
The day we got the track down we went to a party with a rough cut and friends were really liking this new idea, but it seemed to be the winner in all this was the bassline.
To this day the guys still say this track is my tune but I really felt this was definitely one we did together. Well I suppose if it wasn’t for my secret box of bass…. oh, and Matt made a cool vid for it too!
So we’ve been everywhere winning it with this song and it’s probably my favourite to play live and often praised with ‘Man, that bass…’ and the usual milky word and for its technical brilliance.

Everyone loves that song, and I loved being able to do something with a bassline I’d been saving for a special day.
So imagine the look on my face when I heard it get its first airplay on BBC Introducing two weeks ago.
And that track was called The Villain.
